SPACE Matrix

Strategic Position and Action Evaluation (SPACE) Matrix is a tool used to determine what type of strategy a company should undertake. The SPACE grid has four quadrants, each proposes an alternate temperament of a system:

  • Aggressive: attractive industry with stable economic condition

  • Competitive: attractive industry with relatively unstable environment

  • Conservative: low growth industry but stable market

  • Defensive: unattractive industry & competitive market

The SPACE Matrix investigates two internal & two external vital measurements the decide the organization's stance in the business.

Internal strategic dimensions:

  • FS: Financial Strength (Y axis; values varies from +1 to +6)

  • CA: Competitive Advantage (X axis; values varies from -1 to -6)

External strategic dimensions:

  • IS: Industry Strength (X axis; values varies from +1 to +6)

  • ES: Environmental Stability (Y axis; values varies from -1 to -6)
